Technical University of Cluj Napoca
Department of Electrical Machines, Marketing and
Management

General Information

The Department of Electrical Machines, Marketing & Management is one of the five departments of the Electrotechnics Faculty from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania).

In the spring semester of 1990 the former Electrical Engineering Faculty spread out in three new faculties:

  • Electrical engineering
  • Computer science and control engineering
  • Electronics engineering.

At that time Electrical Machines Division was a part of a huge unit named Power Energy Department. The Marketing and Management Division was the smallest one from the Department of Electrotechnics.

Beginning with the fall semester of 1990 the new Department of Electrical Machines, Marketing and Management was constituted. To this department belonged all the subjects in connection to Electrical Machines and to Marketing & Management. The founder head of department was I.A. Viorel .

At the very beginning the new department had 9 members. The Department steadily increases its staff since new subjects were added and the Faculty developed new specialties, as Electromechanics, Energetics and so on.

During these years several important results in teaching and research were achieved. More then ten Ph.D. students defended their thesis under the supervision of the Department's members. Some representative books and textbooks and hundreds of scientific papers were published.

Several professors from other universities visited the Department, such as Prof. Marcel JUFER (L'Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne Switzerland), Prof. Gerhard HENNEBERGER (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Germany), Prof. Kenzo KAMIYAMA, (Utsunomiya University, Japan), Prof. Kay HAMEYER (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Germany), Prof. Jean-Jaques SIMMOND (L'Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland), Prof. Benoit ROBYNS (Université Catholique de Lille, France), Prof. Ellen Frank (Southern Connecticut State University), etc.

Yearly more than 300 students are educated by the Department's staff . The theoretical knowledge acquired during the over 40 lectures provided by the department's staff is thoroughly supported by numerous laboratory experiments. During laboratory work and when doing the final project students are systematically educated at several workplaces in the 4 laboratories of the department.

The members of the Department are involved in several research projects (both in the field of electrical machines, respectively marketing and management). Over 30 Ph.D. students (conducted by the six Ph.D. supervisors of the department) are also involved in these research activities. As a result of the research, every year about 20-30 scientific papers are published in journals and conference proceedings. People from the Department attended almost all of the important international conferences held in Europe in our fields also presenting well-appreciated contributions.

Since 2001 our Department together with the Electrical Drives & Robots Department form a Center of Excellence for Science and Research in the field of electrical machines and drives (head: V. Iancu ). The Center of Excellence is recognised by the National University Research Council of the Romanian Ministry of Education.

The Marketing & Management group of the Department manages the Romanian-American Center for Entrepreneurship Education and Management Development , set up in the framework of an USAID-ALO grant (2004-2006). The Center is a partnership between Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and Southern Connecticut State University.
